Episode 16: 🇻🇪 Venezuela 🇻🇪

Today we have a first for you: a full episode dedicated to musicians from one country. Esta vez: Venezuela! Though by no means a survey of the vast musical output and traditions of  Vero’s magical homeland, we bring you some of our faves, old standbys, and hints about movidas and heavyweights in the country and across the diaspora. Está cheverísimo, so no te lo pierdas!

Listen on iTunesSoundcloudStitcher and Google Play. As always, featured songs are below.

La Estrella Irregular – Algodón Egipcio

Que Bueno Baila Usted – Oscar D’Leon

Thievery – Arca

Niña Bonita – Chino y Nacho

Abuso de Poder – Gabylonia

Caballo Viejo – Simón Díaz

hi! two comments that i thought of while listening to this ep: (1) castellano, que bueno que baila usted – not saying it’s not about a spaniard, but i feel like it could very easily be about the language itself (y miriam, like, that’s why the spanish version of songs get you more than the english versions, no?) (2) re: chino, definitely agree with vero that there’s an aspect of what people’s eyes look like (my tío called me china when I was young because my eyes were almond shaped) but as far as the bodega, at least in perú, and from what i’ve been told, a lot of the bodeguitas son del “chino”, and it’s not always that the owner is NOW chinese, but that when bodegas were first opened it was often chinese immigrants who had the first bodegas way back when – thoughts?
