Meneito 19: The Most Miami

This week we bring you a few gems we’re loving right now–a boricua bachatero, one of our favorite reggaetoneras showing off her MC skills, and a local D.C. group bringing social justice cumbia–plus a THE MOST MIAMI WhatsApp audio message from Vero’s sister, which…uncovers a possible Ivy Queen side hustle?! And because we stay doing the most, we throw in a grammar PSA about the “X” in Spanish and a rant about white Marxists. Ya tu sabes, the usual.

Featuring music by Jay Ruiz, Milka La Más Dura, and Elena & Los Fulanos.

Episode 53: Gone Too Soon

You know the ones–those music icons whose lives (and careers) ended tragically and well before their time. On this week’s episode we revisit some of our favorite Latinx artists who died young, leaving behind incredible legacies and a lot of sadness about what they could have achieved if they’d had more time.

Featuring music by Selena, Big Pun, NORE, Juan Gabriel, Hector Lavoe, La Lupe and Jenni Rivera.

Meneito 18: A Music Rollercoaster

We’re back this week with our wild mix of música – some psychedelic experimental salsa, some saccharine pop, a goth reggaeton remix…ya tu sabes, lo de siempre.  We also chat about some of la tele that we watch and, naturally, British colonialism.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Can you believe these mofos raped and plundered across the world for spices only not to use any now? Que falta de respeto!

Featuring music by La Mecánica Popular, Siam, and Merca Bae ft ZutZut.

Episode 52: Novela Themes

JK COME BAAAAACK and tune in for some mad dramática jams, as well as some twists and turns in our own conversation – because if you’re not expecting a Latin Americanist critique of US Leftist spaces nestled between these cheeseball joints, you got us fucked up.

Featuring music by Laura Leon, Yordano, Willy Chirino, Thalía, Yolanda Rayo, and OV7.

Article Pérez mentioned on the episode: Why I Don’t Want to Hear About Your Vacation to Cuba

Episode 51: Accordion

On this week’s episode we take a tour through Latin America via the sounds of the incredible accordion. An instrument originally from Germany, it’s been incorporated into so many different genres of Latin American music–vallenato, merengue típico, tango, rancheras y muchos más! This might be our most diverse episode yet.

Episode 50: Colombia

This week we bring very special invitadx DJ Alex DB to get into some of the musical traditions of Colombia. We leave behind more well-known paisas – your J Balvins and Malumas – in favor of digging into vallenatos, sextetos, and AfroColombian musical traditions from what was probably the first free black community in the Americas. There is no way to cover the nuances and diversity of music of Colombia in six songs, pero we hope that this selection encourages you to search for más y más!

Featuring music by El Combo De Las Estrellas, Genio El Del Canto Bello, Adassa, Alejo Duran, Sexteto Tabalá, and Kombilesa Mi.

You can find DJ Alex DB on Facebook and Instagram, and you can listen to their latest mix on soundcloud!
